Everyday Systems is an 8-episode short documentary series (10β15 min each) filmed in Komoro, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Produced by Akiya Collective (U.S. 501(c)(3)), the series examines how everyday civic practices in Japan (such as waste sorting, public infrastructure, and neighborhood coordination) shape trust, responsibility, and social life. Often invisible to those who grow up within them, these practices offer valuable perspectives for U.S. communities navigating sustainability challenges, community fragmentation, and declining participation.
The series will be filmed in ordinary settings and highlight moments of learning and adaptation, presenting daily life as a starting point for reflection and dialogue around social cohesion. It will be produced and accompanied by facilitated public screenings and educational resources in the United States, designed to foster cross-cultural conversation and deepen understanding of contemporary Japanese society while addressing shared global concerns.
Core themes: Civic infrastructure as cultural practice, trust-based systems, rural depopulation, cross-cultural encounter, community resilience, intangible heritage
