“places are a container for cultural, social and individual relationship”
what variables add to a “sense of place”?
influenced by both objective features (landscape, smell, sound, design) and subjective experience (memory, culture, social ties) - not inherent in location
can also test among variables: experience, duration, social interaction, and satisfaction with the place
happens when a place becomes “important” to someone. especially interesting: this strengthens when people feel responsible for integrated with the place (culminating in “sacrifice for the place”)
Sacrifice for place: This level is the highest level of sense of place and people have the deepest commitment to place.
scales of attachment (Shamai 1991): progression from awareness → belonging → attachment → [identification → involvement] → sacrifice for place
how can we increase collective responsibility + stewardship of public spaces (or someone else’s home)?
akiya sites could be designed as an evolving emotionally intelligent habitat; similar to how the current makerspace is (infused by people who have made “their mark” on the spatial architecture)
cross-culture narrative layer via myths, folklore, etc
how to create more pollinators of place attachment? ie more places to feel like home
