Softening the light in Tatami Room 2

The default diffuser from the light in Tatami Room 2 leaves a lot to be desired. It’s heavy and prevents the light from staying put when raised. We opted to remove it and tried designing a diffuser based on washi paper.

First attempt: Cut out washi paper to plastic diffuser size + some extra spacing. Also tried a paper mache glue trick to see if we could mold the washi paper to the shape of the original diffuser with cornstarch “glue”. Unfortunately, it did not maintain it’s shape after spreading a ton of the thick cornstarch on both sides. It basically really did nothing.

Placed it on the lamp and tried to figure out how to tape it to the inside (or outside) of the top lampshade, but it was very difficult to find purchase with the tape to any surface. I eventually noticed that there was a rubber gasket of sorts that wrapped around the rim of the shade to protect people from bumping their heads into hard plastic and getting injured, so thought to use that to secure the diffuser.

Second attempt: Cut out another shape similar to the original diffuser, again with some extra spacing to play with. Removed the rubber gasket, and press fitted the washi paper into the gasket. Success! All that was needed was to cut out the extra paper sticking out on top, and clean up the rest by using a small butter knife to push the frayed edges into the rubber gasket. And now the light is lovely and diffused!
